Anweisungen

  • 1 - Prepare Ingredients:
Measure all malt extract, hops, elderflower syrup, sugar, and prepare chamomile tea by steeping bags in 300ml near-boiling water for 15 minutes.
  • 2 - Boil Wort:
In a large pot, bring 3.5 liters of water to a boil. Add pale malt extract and East Kent Goldings hops. Boil for 60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • 3 - Add Elderflower & Chamomile:
With 10 minutes left in the boil, add elderflower syrup and steeped chamomile tea (strain tea bags). Continue boiling to integrate flavors.
  • 4 - Cool & Transfer:
Cool wort rapidly using an ice bath or wort chiller to below 25°C. Transfer to sanitized fermenter, topping up with clean water to 5 liters total.
  • 5 - Fermentation:
Pitch English ale yeast into cooled wort. Ferment at 18-20°C for 10-14 days until fermentation completes.
  • 6 - Bottling:
Dissolve sugar in minimal boiling water to create priming solution. Add to fermented ale, gently mix and bottle. Cap bottles securely.
  • 7 - Conditioning:
Store bottles at room temperature for 7-14 days to carbonate. Chill and serve smooth, floral Riverbank Silk Ale.

A smooth English ale infused with delicate elderflower sweetness and hints of chamomile.

Riverbank Silk Ale

Riverbank Silk Ale is a refined English ale that harmonizes the traditional flavors of pale malt and smooth English hops with the subtle elegance of elderflower and chamomile. Originating with inspiration from the wild riverbanks of rural England, this ale captures the spirit of spring blossoms and fresh countryside notes in a delightful, lightly floral beer.

History & Cultural Significance

Ale brewing is a venerable tradition in English culture, with roots dating back centuries. While traditional recipes focus primarily on malts and hops, the addition of elderflower is less common, giving Riverbank Silk Ale a distinctive signature. Elderflower has deep cultural ties in England as a folkloric plant used not only in culinary applications but also in medicine and celebratory drinks. Chamomile enhances these herbal notes, traditionally linked with relaxing and refreshing infusions.

Tips & Notes

  • Fermentation temperature control is critical: maintaining 18-20°C ensures the ale maintains a smooth balance without unwanted off-flavors.
  • Elderflower syrup quality greatly influences aroma; using freshly prepared or premium syrups will elevate the drink's complexity.
  • The gentle bitterness from East Kent Goldings hops balances the sweetness from elderflower, creating harmony.
  • Conditioning time during bottling allows carbonation to develop fully giving the ale a silky mouthfeel.

Unique Aspects

Unlike harsher commercial ales, Riverbank Silk Ale is celebrated for its smooth texture and intricate floral aroma — making it suitable for those new to ale or looking for a refined taste experience. The interplay of chamomile and elderflower complements English food traditions such as light cheese platters or afternoon teas.

Personal Thoughts

I find this ale perfectly balances tradition with innovation. Its uniqueness lies in the gentle sweetness of elderflower married with classic English ingredients to form a drink both comforting and sophisticated. Ideal for summer nights reflecting along riverbanks or celebrating homebrewing artistry.

Enjoy chilled, and savor the delicate layering of flavors which reflect England’s natural beauty and enduring brewing craft.
